About ELYAS
On a typical weekday, Elyas wakes up by 5 AM to eat breakfast and get ready to go to school. Although he spends around four hours every day on his homework, he also finds time to hang out with his family, chat with his friends, and occasionally go over to a friend’s house. His sense of humor is evident from how he describes some of his relationships: about his much younger sister, he writes candidly, “She enjoys annoying me, but that’s what makes our relationship special.” Elyas is grateful that he can help her with her schoolwork and be a role model to her as she grows up, just like he is grateful for each of his other three family members.
Elyas describes his interests as revolving around “the three Ps,” standing for, he says, “planes, penguins, and pens!” These represent his career interests (aviation and flying planes), intellectual curiosity (he is fascinated by how “penguins are just unique, in shape, manners, and every way possible!”), and main hobby (calligraphy). Elyas likes to feel physically and mentally fit through home exercise, and he has maintained his close-knit circle of friends since elementary school. He and his friends sometimes stay at someone’s house to spend time, but otherwise, they enjoy going to the movies or the arcade.
Elyas enjoys meeting new people, and, during his exchange year, he is excited to gain new cultural knowledge. He is excited to become a part of his host family and looks forward to learning about the similarities and differences between his host family’s routines and his in Bahrain. He says, “I am a confident person because I trust my work and ideas,” but he also approaches new situations with humility and care. He is entering his exchange year with an open mind, excited to learn about new ways of life, meet new people, and try new activities during his time in the US!
