American Councils is pleased to announce our November FLEX Student of the Month: Luka, a FLEX program student from Montenegro!

The biggest lesson that I’ve learned is that people across the world are actually not that different. In our roots as family, we are all the same.
— Luka, FLEX student from Montenegro

American Councils PO is pleased to announce that Luka Vujovic from Montenegro for is the FLEX Student of the Month in November 2023! Luka is placed in Pueblo, Colorado, where he attends Pueblo East High School.

Since his arrival in August, Luka has left an indelible mark on his host community, recognized for his unwavering commitment to community service, openness to new experiences, and the meaningful relationships he's forged his host family and friends. “The biggest lesson that I've learned,” Luka says, “is that people across the world are actually not that different. In our roots as family, we are all the same.”

Luka is a quiet leader. He is thoughtful, energetic and so willing to try everything placed in front of him. We are so blessed to have him in our household.
— Michele, Host Mom

Luka's influence is recognized as a catalyst for positive change in his community. He is actively engaged in leadership roles at his high school, serving on the Student Council and eagerly anticipating holiday volunteering projects. He was also the first AC PO student to exceed 30 community service hours and has now recorded over 60! His favorite projects include regular visits to a local nursing home and an Alzheimer's Fair fundraiser. Residents at the nursing home appreciate Luka's genuine interactions, highlighting his refreshing attention to their stories and willingness to jump into activities.

Luka also exemplifies positivity in his connections to his host family. “The most significant relationship I have made here is with my host parents. We never fail to say how grateful we are for each other,” he says. Luka’s host parents have nothing but positive things to say about Luka’s time with their family, as well. Luka’s host mom Michele Cameron Walker says, “Luka is a quiet leader. He is thoughtful, energetic and so willing to try everything placed in front of him. We are so blessed to have him in our household."

Luka's Local Coordinator applauds his positive attitude, exemplified by his busy schedule with the Student Council, dedication to volunteering, and determination to leave a positive impact. Luka approaches challenges with a calm demeanor, from maintaining a 4.0 GPA to hiking with his host dad. From embracing creative pursuits like art and music classes to exploring his passions for analytical math and guitar improvisation, Luka's enthusiasm is boundless.

Luka is an outstanding student and a great ambassador for his country. We can’t wait to see what else he accomplishes!
