American Councils PO is pleased to announce that Adina from Romania has been selected as Student of the Month! Adina is placed in Virginia and attends Clarke County High School.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned about the American culture so far is the value placed on diversity and inclusion. I’ve seen that since I came here in my host community. I’ve never felt excluded or not accepted because of my different background. On the contrary, when I tell people I’m an exchange student they’re always very welcoming and curious about me and my country.

According to Adina’s Local coordinator, Adina has embraced her host community with enthusiasm and openness, from her involvement with extracurricular activities to the relationships she’s formed with her host family. She’s also been an excellent cultural ambassador at school and through local international festivals.

The relationship between me and my host sister is very special to me. We have so many things in common. We both like reading, learning new languages, and throughout our lives, we both wanted to have the same jobs. I feel like I’ve made a sister for life.

Adina has also dived into all aspects of school and host family life. Her participation in clubs like cheerleading, Interact, DECA, and Track and Field showcases not only her versatility but also her drive to make the most of her time on the program. Notably, in DECA, she secured third place in her event at the district level, earning a well-deserved spot at the state competition! She’s also welcomed opportunities to try new things: most recently, Adina has decided to learn how to run hurdles with her Track and Field team!

Adina's impact as a FLEX student also extends to the community. With her cluster, Adina organized a meaningful food drive for Global Youth Service Day, showcasing her initiative and commitment to making a difference. And, above all, Adina says that her connection to her host family has become the most cherished part of her exchange year.  Adina and her host sister have forged a sisterhood that transcends borders!

At school and in the community, Adina continues to be a cultural ambassador, a strong student, and a compassionate leader. Her legacy of unity and embracing diversity will undoubtedly leave an enduring mark on Bluemont long after her departure.
