About LEEANN

Leeann is a hardworking student eager to make a positive change in her life and in the world! At home, she enjoys spending time with her family, which includes her parents, grandparents, and young brother. In the evenings, you’ll often find Leanne watching TV with her family, sharing stories about their days, discussing challenges and giving each other advice. Around her community, Leeann is known as an outgoing person who likes to make new friends. Her friends describe her as “cheerful, optimistic, and patient.” Together, they enjoy watching movies, studying together, and participating in clubs.

At school, Leeann is an engaged student who is always willing to help her peers during group work. She is also a natural leader and has an insatiable curiosity. Leeann’s favorite club is the Ocean Conservation Youth Club! She enjoys it the most because she recognizes that Kiribati “is suffering severely from climate change,” and this club gives her the opportunity to make a difference. As a member of the club, she improves her understanding of marine resources and ways to improve and conserve them. Leeann also enjoys writing poems and stories and watching historical movies. She plans to study literature in college and aspires to become a teacher!

In thinking about her exchange year, academically, Leeann is excited to join “any clubs or activities related to environment conservation or literature.” She also wants her host family to know that she is eager to “make friends, share my culture, as well as experience yours firsthand!” She adds, “Ten months is a long time indeed, but I believe that my patience and my love for trying new experiences will enable me to be successful.” Leeann will be the first in her family to go to the US, so she looks forward to sharing the American culture with her family and her community in Kiribati as an alumna, as well!
